Bowden says FSU fired him

Legendary coach Bobby Bowden has come out in an interview and claimed that he was fired from Florida State.

Bowden is set to begin a promotion for his new book and has been giving interviews to conjure up interest.

He said he was told by the athletic director that he could either remain coach but not be allowed on the field or he could be terminated.

Bowden said there was no way he was going to get paid all that money for some meaningless figurehead position, so he said that was not going to work.

He also said that when he went to pack up his office a week later, there was no one there to thank him for all of his years at the school.

Down by 16 points at halftime against a NCAA Tournament savvy team, it looked like the Florida State Seminoles might be run right off the floor in their tourney opener.

But the Seminoles found themselves surging for most of the second half before finally falling short, their season ending with a 67-60 loss to Gonzaga in the opening round of the NCAAs on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y.

Deividas Dulkys scored a team-high 14 points, and Solomon Alabi added 13 for Florida State (22-10), which trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half before chipping away at the Gonzaga lead. Dulkys’ 3-pointer with 2:21 to go brought the ‘Noles within five points at 59-54.

But Gonzaga kept FSU at bay from there, hitting its free throws in the final two minutes.

The Seminoles, the ninth seed, fell behind by 15 points thanks to a 24-7 first-half run by the more-experienced Bulldogs. FSU shot just 35.6 percent from the floor, while the Bulldogs hit on 50 percent of their shots.

After winning five of their final six games entering the postseason, the Seminoles ended up losing in both their Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA tournament openers.

Fla. St. To Forfeit 12 Football Wins, Track Title

Florida State announced on Sunday that it would be forfeiting 12 wins in football and a track title stemming from an academic fraud scandal involving 61 student-athletes in 2006-07.

With coach Bobby Bowden’s retirement from Florida State football after 30 plus years, he now finishes his college football career with 377 career wins. That leaves Bowden short of Joe Paterno, the head coach of Penn State, for all-time wins for a coach.

Florida State appealed the NCAA’s ruling to vacate the wins, but the NCAA upheld their ruling.

The penalty also meant that the school had to relinquish its 2007 NCAA track and field championship, and NCAA tournament victories in both women’s basketball and baseball. The school gave up 22 men’s basketball wins, including two wins in the NIT.
